Head coach of the UC San Diego Men’s Team for 26 years

·        Cumulative record of 326-138-48 (winningest coach in UCSD history)

·        Won NCAA Division III National titles in 1988, 1991 & 1993 (runner-up in 1986)

·        Teams were selected for the NCAA Playoffs 16 times

·        1988 championship team went undefeated (23-0-2)

He is one the founding members of US Club Soccer, and retired in January 2009 from serving as US Club Soccer Region 4 Representative on the Board of Directors and their Executive Board of Directors . (

USCLUB SOCCER

Derek served as a staff member of the USSF for many years, even teaching A-license courses in the early 80’s.  In 1987, Derek was selected as the National Team Coach for the USA’s under-20 national youth team. He successfully qualified the team through CONCACAF to win a place at the U-20 World Cup in Chile in 1989. On the way beating Mexico 3-0 in Concacaf and being the first USA National coach to do so. Most recently Derek was involved in a technical committee with US Soccer which created the US Soccer Development Academy.

During the period 1983 to 2007 Derek has been the coach of UCSD mens college program where he recently retired . The highlights of this period being the winning of 3 National titles for the college .

COLLEGE SOCCER

 

Derek Armstrong, originally hails from Carlisle, England. He lived for many years in Blackpool where he represented the club as a player and coach.Derek played professionally as a young man in the English Premier leagues for Carlisle United and Blackpool FC, he played as a semi-pro and manager/coach/player for Fleetwood FC and Lancaster FC for over 15 years before starting his professional Coaching career in 1978 with Blackpool FC’s reserve team. In 1980 Derek moved to the United States with his family to coach the Columbus Magic in OH.  In 1981 Derek moved to La Jolla at the invitation of Joe Hollow to be the first paid youth coach in the United States for the Nomads. He is well known in local and national soccer circles. In 1986 Armstrong helped found the San Diego Nomads, which he coached and led to the Western Alliance Soccer League titles in 1987 and 1989. In 1989 the team lost to Fort Lauderdale in the National Professional Championship in San Jose.  In 2001 the Nomads ran the final season of the San Diego Flash, A-League franchise, Derek and the Nomads coaching staff coached the team through to a great playoff run. During this time he has presided over a coaching staff, which has won numerous Far West Regional Championships and six (6) National titles. In 2007 together with Paul Holohan they led the Nomads BU18s to win the  RED BULL national title in Chicago .
