The Nomads Soccer Club & Academy was established in 1976 and incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1987.
The 2008/2009 season consists of ten (10) boys teams ages Under 8 through Under 18 and nine (7) girls teams ages Under 12 through Under 18. Derek Armstrong is our Director of Coaching and Brian McManus
Director of Coaching for our Girls Program.
The Nomads are committed to creating a development strategy that addresses each player’s needs and aspirations.
Our Front office is managed by Debra Diaz and Mary Kaliff who work diligently operating the club and raising funds for our programs.
Each year we hold 2 tournaments over 4 weekends. These tournaments currently draw over 1,000 teams from all over the United States and abroad. Sanctioning is currently provided by US Club Soccer. Over 250 college coaches attend our Thanksgiving and Showcase tournaments each year making our events one of the largest recruiting events on the college coaches calendar each year. Our tournaments are a huge economic boost for the San Diego community with over 60 hotels working to provide accommodation for teams participating in our tournaments. All the proceeds raised at our tournaments go back into our programs. Tournaments are headquartered at UCSD in La Jolla and games are played at many local schools, colleges and recreation centers - all within a 20 minute radius of La Jolla.
We would like to take a moment to thank our sponsors and volunteers for their tireless support. Adidas and Nomads have made an agreement to continue their sponsorship for the next 4 years through the year 2010. Our tournament software and web site have been sponsored by our host Demosphere International, Inc.
Our goals for the next 5 years include locating land to build a soccer park that will draw more teams and events to the San Diego community. We hope to co-op with other local clubs on the development of this park.
The Nomads are a member of the US Soccer Player Development Academy, boys with birth dates January 1 1990 and January 1 1992 will participate in 2008/2009. We are working towards developing their training curriculum to include competitive play at all levels: international friendlies against professional club; national teams and other clubs.
In April 2008 we introduced our new Academy Community School. Players who are experiencing difficulty meeting their educational obligations are enrolled to receive special individually prepared accredited courses through the San Diego County Office of Education as an alternative to the City School they were attending.
We seek to continue educating our coaching staff and to provide our players with a development plan that will help them reach their full playing potential.
We will continue to provide exit strategies for our players as they grow past the Under 16 age bracket, to including college placement, professional play, or if desired a job coaching soccer. We have built strong relationships with colleges over the years. Our staff are contacted regularly to provide players, including such colleges as Harvard and Yale. Our coaching staff have worked for many years at UCSD and are always recruiting good players.
It has been said that "once a Nomad, always a Nomad." With this in mind we hope to develop our Alumni organization into becoming a strong support system for our Club by providing mentors, volunteers and fundraising opportuntiies.
